Top Septic Tank FAQ's Answered

Your septic tank must be properly maintained to ensure it continues to operate without any issue. Lack of maintenance can lead to costly (and sometimes unsightly) issues. Read through our septic tank FAQ's for guidance on your septic tank maintenance.

How long does it take for a septic tank to get full?

It depends on the capacity of the tank.
It can take three or more years for a family of four to fill a septic tank. It could take a business two to three years, depending on the capacity of the tank.

Does shower water go into my septic tank?

Yes.
All water in your home combines into a single pipe that leads to your septic tank.

Can a septic tank backup into the house?

Yes, if it is not maintained properly.
Once your septic tank reaches its maximum capacity, solid waste will backup to the pipe and possibly into your home

How often should my septic system be pumped?

It depends on the capacity of the tank.
We recommend a family of four has their septic tank pumped every three years. Businesses may need their tank pumped more often.

Do I really need to pump your septic tank?

Yes, if you want to prevent costly (and unsightly) issues.
An annual inspection will determine the capacity of your septic tank. If your septic tank is nearing its maximum capacity, your tank should be pumped to prevent backup into your home or business.

What happens if a septic tank is not pumped?

Waste will backup into your toilet(s).
It is not a question of if, but when waste will backup into your toilet(s). In addition to this unsightly issue, you may create larger issues that could lead to costly repairs.

Can I use bleach in my septic tank?

No, you should not use bleach.
Septic tanks are filled with specific bacteria that aid in handling human waste. Bleach should never be poured directly into drains. A small amount in laundry from time to time will not harm the integrity of your system.

Do I need to buy products to put in the septic tank?

No products are necessary.
Your septic tank does not need additional products, like RIDX, to go into the system. In fact, many of these products can harm the bacteria in the system. When these bacteria are harmed, the amount of waste that can be broken down is quickly diminished. Only human, laundry, and minimal food waste should go into your septic tank.

Can I use my garbage disposal?

Yes, minimally.
Your garbage disposal should be used sparingly in order to prevent filling your septic tank too quickly. The natural bacteria in the tank cannot break down food particles as quickly as human waste. The more often you use your disposal, the more often you will need an inspection.
